Otway Pork moves to new export-quality abattoir

NOVEMBER 12, 2004

Victoria’s largest outdoor pig producer, Otway Pork, has moved its processing division to a new export-quality abattoir as it gears up to meet increasing demand for its premium products.

Otway Pork is currently sold through more than 30 independent butchers including Peter G Bouchier at David Jones and Toorak, Lonie’s of Brighton and Leo’s Fine Food and Wine in Heidelberg and Kew. The brand is also now stocked in more than 60 Coles supermarkets throughout Melbourne, Geelong and Ballarat.

And with customers increasingly asking for natural, chemical-free foods, interest in Otway Pork is growing strongly.

“There is definitely an increasing emphasis on so-called safe foods with butchers telling us that customers are specifically requesting pork that has no added growth hormones or chemicals,” says Otway Pork Manager Brendan Hume.

“Once customers try our pork, they keep coming back for more – not only because it is chemical-free and RSPCA accredited, but because it also tastes fantastic.

“In fact, many butchers who trial Otway Pork in their stores are so impressed by the quality they choose to make it their only pork product.”

Brendan Hume says Otway Pork’s recent move to the export-grade Diamond Valley Pork at Laverton means butchers and consumers can now have even greater confidence in the product’s consistent quality.

Only female pigs are selected for Otway Pork products, eliminating the risk of boar taint, with the meat also aged to maximise tenderness.

Otway Pork pigs are bred free range on farms in south-western Victoria. Sows are kept outdoors where they wallow in mud and farrow in keeping with their natural instincts.

From birth, the piglets are free to play, forage, socialise and sleep in straw, before being reared in large, straw-lined eco-shelters with ample room for rest and exercise.  Otway Pork pigs are fed a grain-based diet, free of added growth hormones and antibiotics.

“Being bred outdoors and reared with plenty of room to move ensures our pigs grow as naturally as possible, resulting in juicier and more tender pork products,” Brendan Hume says.
